Mirada and Cabeceo: How Connections Work

In the world of tango, dancers do not simply walk up to someone and ask for a dance. Instead, they use an elegant, unspoken ritual: the Mirada and the Cabeceo. Tanguear brings this tradition into the app as the way you connect with other tangueros.

What are the Mirada and Cabeceo?

In a traditional milonga:

• The Mirada is a deliberate look — a dancer catches the eye of someone across the room to express interest in dancing together
• The Cabeceo is a subtle nod of the head — the other person responds with a nod to accept the invitation

This exchange is mutual, discreet, and respectful. No one is put on the spot. Both parties agree before anyone stands up.

How it works on Tanguear

Tanguear uses the same two-step ritual for sending and accepting friendship requests:

Step 1 — You send a Mirada

When you visit another tanguero's profile and want to connect, tap the Mirada button. This is your "look across the room" — a signal that you would like to be friends.

After sending, the button changes to show a timer icon with the message "Waiting for Cabeceo". The other person receives a notification.

Step 2 — They respond with a Cabeceo

The other person opens your request and can:

• Accept (Cabeceo) — you become friends. You can now see each other's activity, events, and posts
• Decline — the request is removed quietly. No awkwardness, just like in a milonga

A Mirada also arrives by email

Nobody should miss a glance because the app was closed. When someone sends you a Mirada, Tanguear also writes you an email — "A Mirada is waiting for your answer" — so even if you removed the app or muted notifications, you still learn one is waiting.

You can answer right away, from the email:

• "Answer with a Cabeceo" opens a page where you confirm the connection — no login, no app needed. You become friends immediately, and the other person receives the good news by email too.
• "Not this time" opens a page that declines the Mirada. As always, declining is quiet: no connection is created, and you can still find each other later with a new Mirada.

A page only shows the question at first — nothing changes until you confirm on it, so an email scanner opening the links cannot answer for you. The links work only for you, for 60 days; if one expires and the Mirada is still waiting, you will find it in the app among your friend requests.

The email names the sender by their public name — a member who goes by a nickname is shown by their nickname. And it is not spam: the same person sends you at most one Mirada email a day, and the automatic welcome Miradas never write at all.

Managing your connections

Pending Miradas (received)

When someone sends you a Mirada, it appears in your Friends section under pending requests. Review their profile and decide whether to Cabeceo.

Waiting Miradas (sent)

Requests you have sent that have not yet been answered appear as "waiting". You can cancel them if you change your mind.

Your friends

Once a Mirada is accepted with a Cabeceo, the person joins your friends list. From there you can message them, see their events, and stay connected.
